"How old are you?"
I opened my sleepy eyes and found myself in my usual place, my cage, I mean, crib. With my soft blankie next to my face and my dragon binkie in my mouth, I smiled, excited to see what the day would bring. Something felt different about this day, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. I felt a little bit bigger, a little bit stronger, and maybe even a little wiser. The next thing I knew, Mommy and Daddy came rushing into my room with huge smiles on their faces. "Happy Birthday Micah!" Me?? What's a birthday and why is it so happy? Well, I soon learned about what this "birthday" thing really was and it was "happy" beyond my wildest dreams!
First, our house looked so cool. There were so many bright, colorful balloons everywhere. Some were floating in the air and others were on the floor. Mommy kept poking the balloons and they just bounced off of her fingers. At first I was intrigued, but every time I got close to the balloons, I got scared. I tried to muster up the courage to play with them, but I was just too frightened. It was not only decorated inside my house but also outside! I couldn't believe how magnificent it was out there. Large white flakes were falling from the sky and a blanket of white covered all of the trees, grass, and streets! I had seen it decorated like this outside once or twice before, but never this much of it. I couldn't believe my eyes!
It must have been a special day because my Lao Lao, Lao Ye, and Uncle Devin are all here at my house. I love it when they are around. They make me so happy! My mouth was watering and my tummy started growling upon the sight of all of food that was in our house. There were small plates and big plates everywhere, filled with delicious looking food that I knew I wasn't allowed to have. It didn't stop me from trying though! I know Lao Lao will always give me anything I want to eat because she loves to feed me.
Just as my eyes were getting heavy, they placed me on the floor in front of some strange dessert they called a "birthday cake". I was just about to dig in, when everyone gathered around me and started singing a song and clapping their hands. I looked at them in bewilderment and then back down at my birthday cake. With all the commotion and those scary big ballons all around me, I started to get upset and just wanted to be next to Mommy and Daddy. They kept putting me back in front of the cake. They must have really wanted me to eat it. So I dug in...very carefully.

I didn't want to dirty my tie, so I decided to lean over and carefully ate my cake with no hands. It was incredible! I have never tasted such deliciousness!
Soon everyone started to leave and it was time for my nap. Although I was so exhausted, I was too excited to fall asleep. As I tossed and turned, I thought what it meant to be "one". Throughout the day, everyone kept asking me "How old are you?". I would hold out my pointer finger just like my nanny Chelsea taught me. They would clap and smile, "You're one!". From what I can gather, turning one must be a pretty important milestone. I can't wait to see what "two" has in store for me...
