A Month of Thanks...

Everyone kept telling me that after you start having children, time just "flies by". I didn't feel the reality of that statement until just this last month. It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating the start of the fall season, and now Christmas is in three weeks?!

This month was highlighted by the celebration of Thanksgiving, or as I like to call it, Turkey Day. For many Americans, the meaning of Thanksgiving usually includes a cooking and baking extravaganza followed by stuffing our faces with an obscene amount of food, then hitting the stores at the break of dawn to snatch the last Smart TV. So, as we drown ourselves in this sea of gluttony, let us not forget to give thanks.

Here is my 30 thanks for the 30 days of November 2012...

I am thankful for...

  1. each day that we are blessed with perfect weather allowing us to get outdoors to enjoy the warm sunshine and cool breeze.
  2. my health.
  3. finding my soulmate and best friend to take on life's adventures with.
  4. the safe and miraculous birth of our son.
  5. waking up every morning to the sound of Micah's voice.
  6. a perfect job, amazing coworkers, and the ability to support my family.
  7. having a roof over our heads and a place to keep our family warm and safe.
  8. motherhood, because it may be the greatest adventure of my life.
  9. not having any food allergies. I love to eat and I don't like to be restricted.
  10. a reliable vehicle that gets me where I need to go.
  11. weekends, mini-vacations, and long sabbaticals.
  12. having my family so close by, which I sometimes take for granted.
  13. having in-laws in one of the most beautiful places in the world, Hawaii.
  14. my parents, who always make sure we are all well fed.
  15. four day work weeks.
  16. girls' nights with vino, chocolate, and good eats.
  17. a healthy little boy. Everyday when I see sick kids at the hospital, I am reminded of how blessed we are to have a healthy child.
  18. being able to get a full night's sleep again.
  19. all the times CR changes the oil in my car or fills up the gas tank so I don't have to do it in the morning before work.
  20. a long streak without any rock climbing injuries.
  21. my five senses.
  22. great friends, both near and far.
  23. having rock to climb on within driving distance.
  24. my baby brother, and being able to see him on a regular basis after missing out on so many years of his childhood.
  25. a working washer and dryer.
  26. all of our rock climbing friends in St. Louis, who make it possible for us to still enjoy our passions in life with the addition of a baby.
  27. Micah's smile and laughter.
  28. running water, electricity, and all the other simple luxuries in life we take for granted.
  29. getting my body back to pre-pregnancy weight in such a short time.
  30. the sun, the moon, the stars, and the earth we live on.
Some pictures from our Thanksgiving dinner. Here's to a happy, short, and mild winter!

Reaching New Heights

Horseshoe Canyon Ranch, November 16-18, 2012

Micah waking up in the morning
After two weeks of hard work, CR finished the sleeping platform for the Tacoma. Complete with a futon bed, down comforters, built in storage compartments, and a propane heater, our sleeping quarters were ready for a chilly fall weekend at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch. My definition of chilly is anything under 60 degrees, so I was well prepared for the 40 degree nights. In fact, I think I packed enough clothes for Micah and I to survive a night in the Arctic. Much to our surprise, the weekend was absolutely beautiful, allowing us to shed the long johns and leg warmers and climb comfortably under the warm sun. And the friction? Impeccable.

CR confidently jumped on Egyptian Airbus (5.12c) as his warmup climb, a route infamous for its horizontal, all-points off dyno, a move all too familiar for a boulderer at heart. Upon reaching the crux, CR was quickly humbled as his best attempts were thwarted by the sheer distance required to stick to move. And thus, the Airbus remained undefeated and we moved on to my project for the weekend, Mine Mine Mine (5.11d). It’s been a year and a half since I have tried this route. MMM starts with some good holds and leads to a double knee bar rest. After a few technical moves on a short face, it veers left to a small roof, which requires a big dynamic move to reach a good hold. This redpoint crux always gave me trouble in the past as I am usually out of juice by that point. I love the variety of moves on this climb and was psyched to get back on it. I made quick work of the beginning section, which felt a lot easier than I remembered. However, I was quickly shut down at the crux again and realized that I would have to find some new beta in order to send the route. After figuring out a less dynamic way to get through the crux, I was able to tick this one off the list.

Hanging out at the crag with Big Steve

Meanwhile, CR spotted an interesting looking, newly bolted line to the right of Love Slave. Sometimes it is refreshing to try a route without the knowledge of its proposed grade. CR quickly came to the realization that the crux on this route was no joke. After four tries, he was able to send this, but not without a considerable amount of effort and loud grunting. (We later found out this climb is called Goldmember, 5.12b). Since Micah was taking a super nap, we decided to jump on the newly bolted right variation of MMM, which turned out to be a really fun climb through a horizontal roof. (Left for Dead, 5.11b)

We decided to end the day by checking out Crab Louse (5.12b), a horrible name for a superb line. This 3 bolt, 35 foot route has also been done as a boulder problem for those willing to take the risk (i.e. Yusuf Daneshyar). Although it is short, this route has some super cool moves that keep coming at you all the way until the very end. Powerful, burly, and steep, each move requires commitment and a little bit of grrr. CR made quick work of it after getting some beta from Big Steve and sent it on his second attempt. After much deliberation, I decided to give it try. Having never attempted a route of this difficulty before, I wanted to work out the moves on TR first, especially given the ground fall potential at the second bolt. Surprisingly, I was able to do all the moves and came to the realization that I may actually be able to redpoint the route. After one attempt on lead, I had to call it quits for the day, but walked away confident that I was very close on sending it.

Yummm....breakfast!

Since it was the first time Micah has ever co-slept with us in the truck, he had a difficult time adjusting to the change, which allowed us to only sleep in 2-3 hours stretches for 2 nights in a row. After a little sending juice (aka coffee) in the morning, we were ready to go for the day. I only had one thing on my agenda. After warming up on some routes in the morning, we headed back to some unfinished business. CR put up the draws and then I watched Calvin crush Crab Louse on his first try, cruising through each section without any hesitation. My first attempt on this was surprisingly a success. The holds felt amazing, my movement was fluid, and before I knew it, I was clipping the anchors, hardly feeling the horrendous pump I had experienced the day before. Done. Eight months after having a baby, I sent my hardest route to date.

CR finished off the weekend on Petrified (5.12a). As with all men, he refused to read the instructions for the climb (aka the guidebook), which clearly indicates to start on some small pockets. Instead, he inspected the start, refused to use the stones that were set out to help boost you up to the starting holds, and decided to do it the “real way”. After multiple attempts at doing a V10 deadpoint from a foothold to a horrible downward sloping two finger pocket, he decided that perhaps the guidebook was correct and went on to flash the route using the proper start holds.

We celebrated our eventful weekend with Big Steve at Sakura, a sushi bar in Springfield, MO, where we wined and dined on sake, fresh sashimi, and a tremendous amount of food on the house. We made it back to tuck the little bambino into his crib and watched as he drifted off to sleep, already dreaming about our next adventure.

Dear Micah (7 Months)

It’s been a fun month and time is just flying by. We celebrated your first Halloween and Thanksgiving. You dressed up as a lobster for Halloween and we dressed up as chefs. We had you inside a huge stock pot, but you didn’t like to be in there. We weren’t going to cook you! You are a baby on the move. You started crawling on the day you turned seven months and you haven’t stopped since. You love exploring the whole house on your hands and knees and try to follow us wherever we go. We Micah-proofed the house so you won’t fall down the stairs or hit your head on the sharp table corners. You love crawling over to us and pulling up on our fingers to stand up. Once you are standing, you love to hold on to our hands and walk around like a big boy. Sometimes you are really brave and will even let go of one hand, but you are not quite ready to stand on your own yet. Your personality is really starting to show now. You love to talk, play, and laugh when you are in a familiar environment, but when you are anywhere new, you become really quiet. The louder it is, the quieter you are. You can sit and just stare at everything around you for a long time, examining every detail, and slowly taking it all in. You definitely have your Daddy’s personality! You have developed some separation anxiety and have become quite the Momma’s boy. You always to have keep Mommy in sight and sometimes won’t let anyone else hold you, especially when you are anywhere new. Although Mommy is clearly your favorite person right now, you only say “Dada” all day long. We’ve caught you babbling all sorts of things that sound like real words. Most of them, you won’t repeat. However, your nanny, Chelsea, told us that you’ve said her name multiple times! You tilted your head to the side once and to be funny, we copied you. Now that you’ve figured out that game, you love tilting your head out of the blue so that we will do it too. You started clapping a week before you turned 8 months! We always clap back and say “Yay!”, which makes your so happy and you clap even more. You are very proud of your new accomplishment and clap all day long, especially in the car and while you are sitting in your high chair. You love to eat and you are not picky at all. Your favorite foods are yogurt, avocados, and bananas. You especially love to feed yourself with your hands. You’re working hard on your pincher grasp and have become quite good at picking up small snacks and putting them in your mouth. We discovered that you are allergic to eggs! Your whole face broke out in hives a few minutes after you started eating them. It was an easy fix with some Benadryl, which didn’t make you sleepy at all! No more eggs for a long time, but hopefully you will grow out of it.

"The Good Life"

With the exception of a 30 second sprinkle, it was another beautiful, crisp autumn day to be out with good friends. The trees are more bare this week and a thick carpet of leaves obscure the trails, crunching loudly under our feet. Tommy and Micah loved hiking in the woods, playing in the dirt and leaves, and swinging on the rope with their Daddies. We adults had our own fun. The highlight of the day was watching Christian and Calvin both crush Elders of the Tribe (5.12c) on their second attempts.

We truly are living "The Good Life". Enjoy the video.
